OpenAI Expands GPT-4.1 Series to ChatGPT: A Game-Changer for AI Users

OpenAI has taken another leap forward by expanding access to its advanced GPT-4.1 series of artificial intelligence (AI) models to ChatGPT. Previously exclusive to the company’s Application Programming Interface (API), these models are now being integrated directly into the popular chatbot, offering enhanced capabilities for coding, instruction following, and long-context understanding.

GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 Mini: What’s New?

In a recent announcement on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI confirmed that GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 miniwill now be available within ChatGPT. The GPT-4.1 model is being positioned as a superior alternative to the o3 model for coding-related tasks, with improved accuracy and efficiency. Meanwhile, the GPT-4.1 mini—a more lightweight version—will replace the GPT-4o mini for free-tier users, offering faster response times at a significantly lower cost.

Key Features of GPT-4.1 Series:

  • Enhanced Coding Proficiency: Outperforms GPT-4o and GPT-4.5 in benchmarks like SWE-bench Verified (54.6%).

  • Better Instruction Following: Scores 38.3% on the MultiChallenge benchmark.

  • Multimodal Long-Context Understanding: Achieves 72% on the Video-MME benchmark.

  • Massive Context Window: Supports up to 1 million tokens, allowing for deeper analysis of lengthy documents.

Availability for Different User Tiers

OpenAI is rolling out the new models in phases:

  • ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users can access GPT-4.1 immediately via the “More Models” dropdown menu.

  • Enterprise and Education subscribers will gain access in the coming weeks.

  • Free-tier users will soon switch from GPT-4o mini to the more efficient GPT-4.1 mini, which reduces latency by 50% and cuts costs by 83% compared to its predecessor.

Deep Research Feature Now Integrates with GitHub

Another major upgrade is ChatGPT’s Deep Research feature, which can now connect directly with GitHub repositories. This enhancement allows developers to seamlessly pull code, analyze repositories, and generate insights without leaving the ChatGPT interface—a significant boost for software engineers and researchers.

Future Developments: Funding and Subscription Models

Reports suggest that OpenAI is in talks with Microsoft for additional funding ahead of a potential Initial Public Offering (IPO). Additionally, the company is exploring new subscription options, including weekly and lifetime plans, to make ChatGPT more accessible.
