Bharti Airtel, one of India’s leading telecom operators, has revised the prices of its voice and SMS-only recharge plans, mere days after introducing new prepaid options in compliance with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) guidelines. This move comes in the wake of TRAI’s announcement that it would closely examine newly launched vouchers from telecom operators to ensure adherence to regulatory provisions.
Revised Airtel Voice and SMS-Only Recharge Plans
Earlier this week, Airtel unveiled two special tariff vouchers (STVs):
- Rs. 499 Plan: Included unlimited voice calls, 900 SMS, and 84 days of validity.
- Rs. 1,959 Plan: Offered unlimited voice calls, 3,600 SMS, and a validity of 365 days.
These plans were introduced as part of Airtel’s strategy to comply with TRAI’s directives for providing voice and SMS-focused recharge options without bundled data. However, the plans were soon removed from Airtel’s website and replaced with more affordable alternatives:
- Rs. 469 Plan: A revised version of the Rs. 499 voucher, offering identical benefits with a lower price tag.
- Rs. 1,849 Plan: Replacing the Rs. 1,959 voucher, maintaining the same benefits at a reduced cost.
Possible Reasons for the Price Reduction
Airtel has not officially disclosed the reasons behind this sudden price revision. However, industry speculation suggests it could be a response to regulatory scrutiny. TRAI, in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), mentioned its plans to examine the newly launched vouchers by Airtel and other operators like Jio.
TRAI’s statement read: “It has come to the notice of TRAI that recently few service providers have launched voice and SMS-only packs which will be reported to TRAI within seven working days from the date of launch. The recently launched vouchers will be examined by TRAI as per extant regulatory provisions.”
This proactive stance by the regulatory body could have prompted Airtel to revise its prices to ensure compliance and align with market expectations.
Data Allowance Recharge Options
For subscribers seeking recharge plans that include data allowances, Airtel offers the following options:
- Rs. 548 Plan: Provides 7GB of data with 84 days of validity.
- Rs. 2,249 Plan: Includes 30GB of data with a validity of 365 days.
These plans cater to users who require both connectivity and data, striking a balance between affordability and utility.
Regulatory Oversight and Future Implications
TRAI’s decision to scrutinize these vouchers highlights the regulatory body’s commitment to maintaining a fair and transparent telecom landscape. The recent developments also indicate that operators like Airtel are adapting quickly to comply with guidelines while staying competitive in the market.
As TRAI continues to evaluate these plans, further adjustments from Airtel and its competitors cannot be ruled out. This dynamic environment underscores the importance of regulatory compliance and customer-centric strategies in the highly competitive telecom sector.
