South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group is set to significantly expand its presence in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market with the launch of its first India-manufactured EVs by 2025. This strategic move aims to position Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia as key players in a space currently dominated by Tata Motors.
Local Production and Launch Timeline
Hyundai Motor Group has announced that production of its locally manufactured EVs will commence by the end of 2024, with the official launch scheduled for 2025. Kia, following suit, will also introduce its India-made EV around the same time. This initiative is part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to unveil five new EV models by 2030.
Battery Partnership with Exide Energy Solutions
To support their new EVs, Hyundai and Kia will utilize batteries produced by Exide Energy Solutions. This collaboration, announced earlier this month, underscores the companies’ commitment to leveraging local resources and expertise to bolster their EV production capabilities in India.
Market Position and Expansion Plans
India represents Hyundai’s largest market outside North America and Europe. Hyundai, the country’s second-largest carmaker, is known for its popular ‘Creta’ sport utility vehicle. Currently, Hyundai offers two electric models in India—the Kona and IONIQ 5—neither of which are locally produced. Similarly, Kia’s sole electric offering, the EV6, is imported.
In a significant growth push, Hyundai has set a target to reach an annual production of 1 million units by 2025. Kia is also expanding its production capacity from about 300,000 to 432,000 units. Combined, the two brands aim to achieve a total production capacity of 1.5 million units.
Strategic Acquisitions and Infrastructure Development
Earlier this year, Hyundai completed the acquisition of a former Chevrolet plant in Maharashtra, marking a pivotal step towards reaching its production goal of 1 million units. This acquisition is part of Hyundai’s strategic efforts to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and infrastructure in India.
Leadership Commitment and Future Outlook
The announcements regarding the new EV launches and expansion plans were made during Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung’s visit to India, his second visit in less than a year. This visit highlights the group’s strong commitment to the Indian market and its determination to become a leading player in the country’s burgeoning EV sector.
Kia Sonet 2024 First Impressions
While the focus remains on future EV launches, Kia continues to make strides with its current lineup. The upcoming Kia Sonet 2024 has generated significant interest and excitement among consumers, showcasing Kia’s innovative design and advanced features.
Enhancing User Experience with Technology
In addition to its EV initiatives, Hyundai Motor Group is also focusing on enhancing the overall user experience. Google Maps will soon feature EV charging stations and public transport options, making it easier for EV owners to find charging points and navigate public transportation.
