iPhone 16 and Google Pixel 9: Anticipated 2024 Releases to Feature Advanced Samsung-Supplied “M14” Displays, Reports Say

As anticipation builds for the most awaited smartphones of 2024, the iPhone 16 and Google Pixel 9, a recent report suggests that these devices will share a significant common feature: advanced displays supplied by Samsung. Both tech giants are gearing up for their respective launch events, with Google expected to unveil its new lineup at the Made by Google event on August 13, and Apple likely to follow with its event in September. These smartphones are set to showcase the latest “M14” screens from Samsung Display.

Samsung’s Role in Supplying Displays

According to a report by the South Korean publication ETNews, Samsung Display will be the primary supplier of OLED screens for both the iPhone 16 and Google Pixel 9. Samsung Display’s reputation for manufacturing high-quality OLED screens makes it a preferred choice for premium smartphones. The “M14” is the latest iteration in Samsung’s display technology, following the “M13” screens currently used in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This upgrade is expected to bring enhancements in brightness, color accuracy, and overall display performance.

Understanding OLED Technology

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) displays are renowned for their superior color reproduction and contrast ratios. Unlike LCD screens, which require a backlight to illuminate liquid crystals, OLED pixels are self-lit. This self-emissive property allows for deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, and more vibrant colors. The transition to “M14” screens is expected to further enhance these qualities, providing users with a richer visual experience.

Display Specifications and Variations

Google Pixel 9 Lineup

The ETNews report indicates that all smartphones in Google’s Pixel 9 lineup will feature the “M14” display. This includes the standard Pixel 9 models as well as the Pixel Fold and its rumored successor. Samsung Display is set to provide four types of “M14” displays to Google, catering to the different variants within the Pixel 9 series.

Apple’s iPhone 16 Lineup

For Apple, the implementation of the “M14” display appears to be more selective. According to the report, only the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will benefit from the advanced “M14” screens. The base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to retain the “M12” displays, which were used in the iPhone 15 Pro. This strategic differentiation ensures that the higher-end models offer a distinct advantage in display quality, aligning with Apple’s tiered product strategy.

Production and Supply Chain

Citing an industry official, the report highlights that Samsung has already placed orders for the materials required for the fabrication of the “M14” panels and has begun preparations for their production. This proactive approach underscores the importance of meeting the high demand expected from both Apple and Google for their flagship devices.
