Police and protesters clash over encroachment in Manipur

Violent clashes broke out in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. Alleging encroachment of tribal lands by reserve forests and wildlife sanctuaries, the local people took out a protest rally. The police tried to stop the rally, which escalated into a brawl.

Indeed, on 10 March a large number of people gathered near Thomas in Kangpokpi town and a protest rally was called by various bodies including the Forum of Indigenous Tribal Leaders. When the police tried to remove the protesters, the dispute escalated and violent clashes started.

Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. Many people were injured in this incident. State Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that the protesters were challenging the constitutional provisions.
