Recent leaks about the iPhone 16 have generated considerable excitement, suggesting several notable upgrades including support for visionOS tools, the introduction of a popular iPhone Pro feature to the standard models, and a significant addition to the user interface. A new set of cases for the iPhone 16, recently examined by the TechNetBook team, supports these speculations and offers a closer look at how these updated features are influencing the external design of the device.
iPhone 16 Camera Orientation Overhaul
The most prominent change is in the orientation of the camera lenses. Departing from the iPhone 15’s diagonal arrangement on a square camera island, the iPhone 16 showcases a vertical alignment on a more elongated, lozenge-shaped island. This change, while not expected to affect the quality of regular photos and videos, facilitates side-by-side lenses when recording in landscape mode. Such an arrangement is crucial for capturing stereoscopic videos suitable for 3D playback on the Apple Vision Pro headset.
iPhone 16 Universal Action Button
The iPhone 16 is also set to include the Action Button, a feature previously exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Max models. This programmable physical button allows users to assign a specific shortcut or action, such as quickly launching the camera app to snap a photo. The new cases reveal a covered button area for this Action Button, indicating its availability across all iPhone 16 models, including the standard versions.

Another significant addition is the Camera Button. Inspired by the positive reception of the similar feature on the iPhone 15 Pro, this new button is expected to be pressure-sensitive, offering a multi-stage press. Users will be able to lock focus with a half-press and take a picture with a full press. The cases show a complete cut-out for this button, confirming its presence and functionality.
Adding to the discussion is Apple’s inductive charging system. The cases show space for a MagSafe ring, which appears thinner than the one on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models. This suggests a lighter and more streamlined charging ring for the iPhone 16 family, enhancing inter-connectivity and convenience.
These upgrades significantly align the standard iPhone 16 models with the Pro versions. This shift indicates Apple’s strategy to narrow the gap in specifications between the vanilla and Pro models, making the standard iPhones more appealing to a broader audience. However, this also implies that the Pro models will need further enhancements to maintain their premium status.
To preserve the distinct appeal of the Pro models, it is anticipated that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will receive substantial camera hardware updates. Rumors suggest an ultrawide camera with a sensor size increased from 12- to 48-megapixels, new optical coatings to minimize lens flare, and improved optical zoom capabilities in the 16 Pro Max via a larger periscope-style telephoto lens.
iPhone 16 Expected Launch
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 16 family in early September 2024, continuing its tradition of annual releases.
