Nominations Close on August 27
The nomination process for the ICC Chairman’s position will close on August 27. The role carries a two-year term, and a Chairman can serve up to three consecutive terms. Barclay, who hails from New Zealand, was re-elected in 2022 after his initial appointment in 2020.
According to ICC rules, the Chairman is elected by a vote from 16 Directors. A minimum of 9 votes is required to secure the position. Previously, a two-thirds majority was needed, but the rules have since been updated to simplify the election process.
Jay Shah’s candidacy is being discussed widely due to his prominent role within BCCI and his existing influence within the ICC. Shah still has one year left in his current term as BCCI Secretary, having first been appointed in October 2019 and re-elected in 2022. According to BCCI’s constitution, a person can serve in a BCCI position for up to six years before a mandatory three-year cooling-off period. This means Shah would have to step down in 2025, making his potential appointment as ICC Chairman a strategic move for his future in cricket administration.
Additionally, Shah currently serves as the head of the ICC’s Finance and Commerce Committee, a significant position that underscores his influence within the organization. His strong relationships with many of the 16 voting members of the ICC could be a crucial factor in securing the Chairman’s role.
If elected, Jay Shah would become the fifth Indian to hold the ICC’s top position. Previous Indian ICC leaders include Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-2000), Sharad Pawar (2010-2012), N. Srinivasan (2014-2015), and Shashank Manohar (2015-2020). Before 2015, the ICC’s top leader was known as the President; the title was later changed to Chairman.
